Course content
SWYA yoga teacher training course weekends give you the opportunity to develop your embodied knowledge, gained through self-experience, lectures, practical work in pairs and groups, reflection and discussion. The weekends and tutorials will become a field for insights and understanding that you can use for your own self-development and for your teaching. The tutors will endeavour to create a rich learning environment that respects individual learning styles, and allows time for “getting lost” and “getting it wrong” and finding your way as you learn.
Diploma weekends are busy and varied. You will practice and consider individual asana in depth as well as expanding your knowledge of structural and functional anatomy as it relates to yoga teaching. You will explore the practice and teaching of relaxation, meditation and pranayama. Esoteric topics of prana and the chakra system will be studied along with kriya, mudra and bandha practices. You will be taught about the history of yoga, and explore the different paths and traditions of yoga. You will consider and reflect upon yoga philosophy (as well as Vedanta and other related philosophies) and what it means to you and your teaching, using a number of important ancient texts on yoga as a source for discussion.
You will develop your understanding of adult teaching and learning and develop the skills that you need to be an effective teacher. You will expand your knowledge of ailments and injuries so that you can deal with people experiencing those in class. You will learn how to plan lessons and courses and continuously refine those skills throughout the course.
You will consider professional, ethical and legal aspects of teaching yoga. You will be given guidance on how to set up a yoga class and the marketing and administration that is needed.
The course is verified by the BWY and there will be occasional visits by Quality Assurance officers during the course to ensure that the course is being delivered to the standard required for qualification.
